This statement is further to the announcement on 9 October when Chemring Group PLC (“Chemring” or “Group”) confirmed that an incident occurred at its Simmel Difesa factory in Colleferro, Italy.
The Group regrets that this incident resulted in one fatality and a number of injuries.
After consultation with the relevant authorities and, with the permission of his family, Chemring can now confirm that the name of the fatally injured person is Roberto Pignalberi. He was 32 years of age and had been employed by Simmel Difesa for 6 years. Chemring offers its deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends. Senior Executives of Simmel Difesa have met with the family and will continue to work with them, and the authorities, to ensure their future welfare.
The company confirms that there were two other persons injured in the incident. Neither has life threatening injuries. 9 other people received hospital treatment for shock and distress and have been discharged.
Chemring has launched a full and immediate investigation into the cause of the incident and is fully co-operating with the authorities on site. It can confirm that the incident occurred when a white light composition ignited whilst being mixed in a remote operation. The compound is used in a product which is deployed for the illumination of battlefields.
